Doorway C

Doorway C is the apartment unit within Ardua Hall assigned to the Supplicant Aunts Aunt Victoria (Agnes Jemima) and Aunt Immortelle (Becka), and later to the newly arrived convert Jade (Nicole). It becomes the intimate domestic space where the three young women live, struggle with faith and obedience, and ultimately prepare for the escape that will help bring down Gilead.

Identity and Layout

Doorway C is one of many identical doorways along the three-storey red-brick building that constitutes Ardua Hall. Each doorway has a few steps leading up to it and a white triangle over the top, inside which is inscribed the Ardua Hall motto: "Per Ardua Cum Estrus." The apartment contains a common sitting area, a bathroom, and three bedrooms—one for each of the two original occupants and a third that was vacant until Jade's arrival. The walls are covered with rose-coloured paper bearing a darker design of trees, and there are nail holes where pictures once hung. The unit is furnished with new, impersonal items, including a sofa, easy chairs, a coffee table, and a dining table. The apartment is marked with the letter C and the motto, which Becka translates as meaning "Through childbirth labour with the female reproductive cycle."

Life Within Doorway C

For nine years, Doorway C is the home of Agnes and Becka, who entered Ardua Hall as Supplicants after escaping forced marriages. Their life there is orderly and monotonous, filled with Bible readings, hymn practice, and the performance of assigned chores. They share a deep friendship, telling each other secrets about their pasts—Agnes confesses her hatred of her stepmother Paula and the death of the Handmaid Crystal, while Becka reveals the abuse she suffered from her father, Dr. Grove. They comfort each other, pray together, and Becka teaches Agnes to read and write. The apartment becomes a sanctuary where they can speak freely, though they remain aware that Aunt Lydia has ways of knowing what is said even in supposedly safe places.

Jade's Arrival and Disruption

When the new convert Jade (Nicole) is assigned to Doorway C by Aunt Lydia, the peaceful routine is shattered. Jade is untidy, leaves her belongings around, fails to flush the toilet, and takes showers at unauthorized hours. She complains about the food, calling the soup "mouldy dishwater" and the tapioca "fish eyes in glue." She pulls hairs from the back of her neck, a habit that Becka warns will create a bald spot. Most disturbingly to the two Supplicants, Jade does physical exercises in her room—thumping and muffled shouts—and when asked, she demonstrates a heartstopper punch, explaining that women need to know how to defend themselves. She dismisses God as "an imaginary friend," which deeply offends Becka. The tattoo on her left arm, reading GOD and LOVE, is considered blasphemous by Becka, who urges its removal. Despite their efforts to instruct her in Gilead's ways, Jade remains stubborn and resistant.

The Revelation and the Escape

Doorway C becomes the setting for the most critical revelations of the novel. Aunt Lydia visits the apartment to inform Agnes and Becka that Jade is actually Baby Nicole, the iconic stolen child of Gilead, and that she is Agnes's half-sister. She then reveals that Nicole must escape back to Canada, carrying a microdot of evidence that will help bring down the regime. Agnes and Nicole are to leave together, disguised as Pearl Girls, while Becka must hide for forty-eight hours to delay discovery. The night before the escape, Aunt Lydia brings the necessary supplies—dresses, pearls, backpacks, money, and maps—to Doorway C. Becka decides to hide in the rooftop water cistern, having first drained the water through the bathtub. The next morning, Nicole and Agnes slip out of Doorway C at dawn, encounter and incapacitate Aunt Vidala near Aunt Lydia's statue, and make their way to the gate. Becka is later discovered dead in the cistern, having sacrificed herself to protect their escape. The apartment that had been a sanctuary for nine years becomes the launching point for the mission that will help destroy Gilead.
